Orlando Jorge Mera, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources in the Dominican Republic, was shot dead in his office. In a statement made by the Presidential Office, it was stated that Mera was shot and taken into custody by her close friend, Miguel Cruz.
While a large number of police and emergency personnel were sent to the ministry building in the capital Santo Domingo, the building, which also includes the Ministry of Tourism, was taken under security circle. Eyewitnesses reported that they heard 7 gunshots during the attack.
Mera, who is also a lawyer, was a founding member of the Modern Revolutionary Party and was appointed Minister of Environment and Natural Resources in August 2020. (UAV)
