The film enters familiar territory. Lowrey (Smith) and his much more docile partner Marcus (Martin Lawrence) bicker as ever but are getting older. While the latter is becoming a grandfather, new generations of police officers are stepping up and retirement is getting closer, there are much more difficult problems elsewhere. The new gangster boss Isabel (Kate del Castillo) mixes up the city with her son Armando (Jacob Scipio). She and Mike share a common past.
A 15-year break can throw some franchises out of balance. Bad Boys 3 gives the series a makeover instead. The exchange of blows between Mike and Markus is as fast as usual, the action is captivating and even the interpersonal scenes are surprisingly close. Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah did a great job as Michael Bay’s successor in the director’s chair.
