Tunisian magistrates go on strike after the dismissal of 57

This Monday, June 6, the Tunisian Association of Judges declared a one-week strike throughout the territory after the dismissal of 57 judges by President Kaïs Saïed last Wednesday. He said he wanted to cleanse the judicial sector of all forms of corruption and obstacles to the proper functioning of justice.

In a hotel in Tunis, Saturday, June 4, more than 200 magistrates from all judicial bodies are gathered at the call of the Association of Tunisian Magistrates. The hour is serious according to the judge Raoudha Karafi. 57 of his colleagues were removed from their posts by the President of the Republic.

Tunisian magistrates also exercise under the threat of being dismissed at any time without the minimum right to defense under vague pretexts such as the state of emergency and the supreme interest of the State so here is the situation is really very very serious. »

No recourse to the decision of the president is possible as long as the magistrates concerned have not been judged in courts for the facts which are reproached to them. Judge Omar Oueslati believes that if the sector really needs reform, this kind of decision is not a solution: “ We are not against the accountability of magistrates but we must respect the existing process. »

In addition to the week-long general strike, the magistrates called for demonstrations on Wednesday June 8.
