33 years have passed since the Tiananmen Square massacre in Beijing in 1989. The anniversary has previously gathered tens of thousands of protesters in Hong Kong, but on Saturday the streets were instead filled with police.
Celebrations of the day have been banned for three years in a row with reference to the corona pandemic. Critics say, however, that the pandemic is a pretext to prevent demonstrations.
However, the ban did not stop all Hong Kongers from demonstrating. The news agency AFP reports that at least six people have been arrested after violating the ban.
