Mizrahim, where the segregation of Eastern Jews in Israel

Mizrahim where the segregation of Eastern Jews in Israel

They arrived in Israel in the 1950s, full of hope and faith in the future, convinced of responding to the call of the Promised Land and convinced of the need to build an egalitarian country, a haven of peace. They found themselves sent to development towns in the middle of the Negev desert, or on the outskirts of Jerusalem or Tel Haviv. Parked in gloomy cities, their children destined for apprenticeship or short studies: they are called “Mizrahim” of the Orientals.

These are the Jews from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia or Yemen, confronted with racism and discrimination. And this segregation continues, even today.

Franco-Israeli filmmaker Michale Boganim has looked into the fate of these Mizrahim in her new documentary. (In theaters in France, June 8, 2022).

Also showing in our cinema this Saturday:
