A chaotic week in the capital traffic reaches its crescendo when this year’s edition of the Stockholm Marathon kicks off on Saturday. When thousands of people have to run 42,195 meters on the streets of Stockholm, accessibility in large parts of the inner city will be severely limited. Several major streets will be cordoned off from 11.30 until the race is over at 19:00. Lidingövägen between Erik Dahlbergsgatan and Valhallavägen is closed from 09 in the morning.
– They pull the string in some places and then you will let go for traffic, but my extremely clear recommendation is to avoid the car throughout Saturday, says Mats Eriksson, press spokesperson at the police in Stockholm.
During the race passes the runners Östermalm, Vasastan, Kungsholmen, Norrmalm, Djurgården, Gamla stan and Södermalm. All bus lines in the inner city are affected by the race. The trunk buses on lines 1,2,3,4 and 6 are affected from 11 a.m. until at least 8 p.m.
The UN climate summit, which took place between 2 and 3 June in Stockholm, has repeatedly caused traffic jams because some delegates had police cards. Some of these leave town on Friday, but some will also remain this weekend.
– We do not have all the details so it is difficult to plan for when they will go to their hotels or to Arlanda, but it will clash partly with the Stockholm Marathon, says Mats Eriksson.
To get around the city on Saturday, SL recommends that you take the subway or boat.
– We will deploy long trains on the metro’s red line. If necessary, we have extra trains that can be deployed at certain times. Before the start, for example, many people want to get to the Stadium via the metro, says Andreas Strömberg, press communicator at SL.
For those who want to get to Djurgården on Saturday, SL will put in extra shuttle boats, as the tram in the city is closed while the race is running.
This weekend, disruptions in rail traffic between Stockholm and Uppsala are also expected. the commuter train section Solna-Häggvik will be replaced by a bus, as the Swedish Transport Administration performs track work.
On Sunday and Monday, the disruptions in traffic continue. World Environment Day affects many inner city buses and National Day celebrations limit the accessibility of both buses and tram traffic between T-centralen and Waldemarsudde.
If you are traveling in Stockholm:
● Avoid the car in the inner city at 11-20 on Saturday.
● Bus traffic is affected during the same time, SL urges those who have to take the bus to be out in good time.
● Longer travel times with the commuter trains north, on the Solna-Häggvik section, traffic is replaced by buses. Other trains between Stockholm-Uppsala are also affected.
