In the letter, the Action Committee “Don’t let us swim”, Fietsersbond, Landelijk Fietsplatform, Te Voet, Vrienden van de Voetveren and Wandelnet discuss the arguments for abolition that the minister recently gave in his answer to parliamentary questions. According to them, the argument that more traffic on the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal entails a higher accident risk has been superseded by more modern ships and new techniques. In addition, the minister has so far only been guided by safety on the canal. According to the organizations, the route on the west side of the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal is less safe for pedestrians and cyclists than a ferry crossing.
