Tunca River, which irrigates thousands of decares of fertile lands of the agricultural city of Edirne, formed islets and grass heaps in its bed after its falling flow. The river, which came to the point of drying, turned into a garbage dump with the discarded waste. The river, which flowed 36 cubic meters/second in March, decreased to 7 cubic meters/second according to the last measured data of DSI Edirne 11th Regional Directorate. It was claimed that the water in the river, which was born in Bulgaria and merged with the Meriç River in Edirne, fell with the paddy (rice) cultivation in the region. While it was seen that the drought was more effective around the Tunca Bridge, the citizens expressed that the low water level in the river was worrying.
Inan Demir said that when there is no water in Edirne, there will be no agriculture, “The river was flowing well during the pandemic. But now there has been a drought. It was because of the rains. It did not rain. Edirne is an agricultural city. “It has to rain first. If it rains, this drought will go away. There are many grasses and water monkeys. This is what happens when there is a drought, unfortunately,” he said.
‘FOR LEVEL FROM LAST YEAR’
Stating that the Tunca River is flowing at a lower level than last year, Betül Okuyan said, “Unfortunately, both the lack of precipitation and environmental conditions make the river worse every year. The Thrace region is an agricultural region. Its appearance outside of the thirst, its filth are garbage. “Every year, we face a worse picture. It is at a lower level than last year,” he said. The people living in the vicinity also said that cleaning work should be done in and around the bed of the river. (DHA)
