Foreign minister Pekka Haavisto (Greens) met with the Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavskýn today in Helsinki. Among other things, the ministers discussed Finland’s NATO membership, for which the Czech government is a NATO country expressed support (switch to another service).
Lipavský says at the press conference that he supports Finland’s accession to NATO. The Foreign Minister promises that the Czech Republic will work to complete the ratification process of Finland’s NATO membership as soon as possible.
According to Lipavský, Finland and the Czech Republic are like-minded Western countries. He says that the membership of Finland and Sweden will strengthen NATO.
Haavisto also said that Finland had received a positive reaction from the Czech Republic in connection with its NATO application.
The ministers also discussed the priorities of the Czech presidency of the EU, which begins in July, the war launched by Russia in Ukraine, the security situation in Europe and the situation in the Western Balkans.
– It is valuable that, as the Czech Presidency of the EU approaches, we will have the opportunity to discuss current changes in Europe with my colleague. The Czech Republic and Finland have many common views on the development of European security and defense.
