Foreign Week: This is how the pandemic has united and divided the world

Sigrid Melchior, how is the pandemic in your coverage area right now?

– It feels like the pandemic is completely over, but it is not. There are still outbreaks all the time, but we no longer write about it in the media and you do not think much about it. We have almost no restrictions anymore, in some places there are small restrictions that remain. The other day, demands for mouth protection in public transport in Brussels, for example, were removed. But overall, the restrictions and covid passes have disappeared, so mentally we are on the other side of the pandemic quite simply, says Sigrid Melchior in Studio DN.

Marianne Björklund, how is the situation in your second hometown of Beijing and in China in general right now?

– It is quite the opposite, compared to Brussels. In Beijing and in China in general, the pandemic is most prevalent. It’s the big topic of conversation and it affects people’s lives from all aspects. That’s what they’re talking about, and that’s what everyone’s worried about: that you’ll end up in a situation where you are not allowed to go out. As so many in Shanghai have not been allowed to do in a very long time. In Beijing, where I live, people are afraid that it will be the same situation there, says Marianne Björklund.
