A driver who allegedly rear-ended a vehicle in Sarnia Saturday, then struck a person with their side-view mirror while trying to drive away from the scene is facing charges, police say.

The collision happened around 2:30 pm at Indian Road and Confederation Street as a driver was waiting for pedestrians to cross before turning right onto Indian Road and was struck from behind, city police said in a news release.

The driver of the hit vehicle exited to survey the damage and check on others, but the other driver reversed from the crash and drove into traffic, allegedly striking the driver of the hit vehicle with their side-view mirror as they fled, police said.

The person allegedly hit by the mirror was taken to hospital and released, police said, noting other vehicles tried unsuccessfully to prevent the fleeing vehicle from leaving the area.

The driver attempted to dump the car and flee on foot in the area of ​​Wellington and Indian roads, about 850 meters to the north, police said.

Police arrested a suspect after a brief foot chase, police said.

Jeffrey Brian Sanders, 36, of Sarnia is charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon, dangerous operation causing bodily harm, and failing to stop at an accident resulting in bodily harm.

Sanders was held for a bail hearing, police said.
