The presidential election where no one stood

Albania has once again failed to elect a new president. No one was nominated for Monday’s vote.

The ruling Social Democratic PS does not have enough mandate to get a president through on its own, which has contributed to no result the three Mondays in a row Parliament met to elect a president.

Next time, however, the chances increase, because according to the rules, the limit from how many votes are required to win is lowered, from 84 to 71 seats. PS has 74 seats. In that case, who the party will nominate for next week is still unclear.

The current president, Ilir Meta, who has been in office since 2017, does not have enough support to be re-elected.
