19 children and two adults were killed in a school shooting at Robb Elementary School in the city of Uvalde on Tuesday morning. The suspected perpetrator, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, was shot dead by police in connection with the attack.
But even though the police were on site early, it took almost an hour before they got the go-ahead to enter the classroom. The police later admitted that it was the wrong decision of the police officer on site to wait for further reinforcements.
Initiates investigation
Now the Ministry of Justice announces that they will make an investigation of the mass shooting. The investigation is being carried out at the request of Uvalde’s mayor, according to the authority.
– The aim of the review is to provide an independent investigation of the police’s actions during the current day and identify lessons that can be helpful for the staff who are first on site during an ongoing shooting, says the department’s spokesperson Anthony Coley in a press release.
The investigation will be conducted by the Office of Community Policing Services. According to the AP, the type of investigation in question is usually carried out by local law enforcement or by external actors rather than on the initiative of the Ministry of Justice.
