The stunning start to one of the best sci fi trilogies

Reboots and remakes are always a tricky business in the film world. There is often a popular original that has stuck in people’s minds with its images and is difficult to surpass. Every now and then there are new editions that come with amazing lightness give a new twist to a story.

That’s what happened with the sci-fi saga Planet of the Apes, which first hit the big screen in 1968. After even master director Tim Burton failed to give the series a successful update, Planet of the Apes: Prevolution, released in 2011, accomplished one little sci-fi wonder.

  • Today on TV: Planet of the Apes: Prevolution airs tonight at 8:15 p.m. on RTL ZWEI. The repetition follows at 1:40 a.m. at night. Alternatively, you can stream the film on Disney+.
  • Sci-Fi Reboot: The Great Planet of the Apes reboot

The reboot, staged by Rupert Wyatt, cleverly detaches itself from the original and chooses a completely new approach: we learn the later conflict between humans and apes through a unlikely friendship between scientist Will Rodman (James Franco) and young chimpanzee Caesar (Andy Serkis).

Planet of the Apes: Prevolution doesn’t unfold as a grand sci-fi extravaganza that transports us to a post-apocalyptic world where the apes have taken over the planet. Also from iconic moments like that Discovery of the Statue of Liberty on the beach the reboot stays away. Instead, we dive into an intimate drama.

Rarely has a science fiction blockbuster been so touching: we learn how Will and Caesar meet, how they live together and basically create a small utopia that is later destroyed. A row tragic events initiates the downfall of civilization and leaves behind a theater of war.

The sci-fi saga continues: Planet of the Apes 4 is in the works

For a long time after Planet of the Apes: Revolution and Planet of the Apes: Survival, it looked like the trilogy was complete. Recently, however, there have been reports that 20th Century Studios is working on a fourth part. Earlier this year, Studio President Steve Asbell had the following to say about Planet of the Apes 4:

We’re expecting one soon [Drehbuchentwurf-]Draft and Wes Ball is in talks to direct. We hope [auf einen Produktionsstart] in late summer or early fall.

A concrete theatrical release date has not yet been determined. However, Planet of the Apes 4 is expected to be released at some point 2024 comes to the cinemas. Until then, we have an extraordinarily successful trilogy.
