At present, the visually impaired may need the help of a close relative or a polling station to pick up envelopes, get help with the ballot paper or tick in the personal selection.
“Voting is one of our fundamental rights as citizens. Therefore, it is important that all people, even those with a severe visual impairment, are given the opportunity to vote without having to ask for help from anyone else,” said Minister of Justice and Home Affairs Morgan Johansson (S) in a press release.
The assignment must be finalized no later than 28 November 2024.
The National Association of the Visually Impaired writes that it is assumed that experiments with the aids will be made in connection with the election to the European Parliament 2024. For the election 2026 “a solution must be in place throughout the country”, the association writes.
