There are sci-fi movies that hit like a bomb. District 9 is one such film. A disturbing story, grandiose staging and breathless action make the debut of Neill Blomkamp (Elysium) one of the best genre films of the last 20 years. Since then, fans have been waiting for a sequel. It’s on TV today.
On TV: The sci-fi spectacle District 9 urgently needs part 2
District 9 starts out conventional enough. Aliens come to earth aboard a massive spaceship. The neglected aliens are housed in a special camp in Johannesburg, where they are hated and forced to live in poverty. 20 years later they are to be relocated under the supervision of young Wikus van de Merwe (Sharlto Copley). Violence breaks out. Then an event changes Wikus’ perspective on immigrants from space forever.

The film manages to comment on topics such as racism and xenophobia, identity, violence and isolation in a unique way. Copley in particular plays his heart out. And blockbuster fans will get their money’s worth with the fast-paced, highly exciting action scenes. No wonder the film was met with rave reviews at the box office (via Boxofficemojo) and reviews (via Metacritic).
Nevertheless, Blomkamp has so far owed the fans a second part. Plans for a sequel, possibly called District 10, have been around for years. The director’s (particularly Chappie’s) critical failures may also have contributed to the delay. A screenplay is now in the works he said about a year ago on Twitter. It means fingers crossed.
