The pea plays a major role in the book. The main character, a seed breeder, wants to restore the pea to its original state and not grow it into an increasingly sweet pea that produces as much as possible. “She wants to grow a kind of peas. And in the book I describe how we form crops and I draw a parallel with how we organize society, with social rules.”
