On Friday, President Samia Suluhu Hassan organized a meeting with the main opposition formation, the Chadema party. Commentators and observers of the political class are already seeing signs of warming.
The meeting took place on Friday at the official residence in Dodoma between the ruling party and the main opposition party, Chadema.
On the CCM side, the president spoke on behalf of her party, surrounded by several influential personalities and ministers. On the opposition side, the delegation was led by leader Freeman Mbowe, recently cleared by the courts who were prosecuting him for alleged acts of terrorism and for which he has already served eight months in prison.
The Chadema party came with several very specific requests: this opposition party calls for the drafting of a new Constitution, the creation of an independent electoral commission. He also called for more fairness on the political scene and raised the issue of pressure against opponents forced into exile.
No decision-making has been formalized on the presidency side. But this meeting remains a strong symbol: it materializes a relaxation with the opposition. The president and leader Freeman Mbowe have already spoken twice in recent months.
The local media go so far as to evoke a first step towards a reconciliation of the political class.
