9 months after release, a Warhammer 40k co-op game gets real RPG skill trees

Warhammer 40k: Darktide has tailed off quickly after a strong start. Players were disappointed with the lack of depth, especially with the classes. That was in November 2022. Now the developers want to deliver what everyone wanted to see at release.

What kind of game is this?

It changes: The developers have announced that Darktide’s skill system will be completely overhauled. Currently you only have one skill point every 5 levels, which you could invest in one of three options per level.

In the new system, the system is divided into a total of three trees, each representing a different orientation for the class. In the end you get more skill points than a tree alone can contain.

This should ensure that you try different playstyles and builds. There is no specific date for the update yet, but October is the release date.

“I’m just thrilled right now”

After Darktide has lost more and more players over the months on Steam, it is currently still at 2,300 players on average (via steamcharts). The news, however, causes great joy in the community.

In the corresponding thread on Reddit, hundreds of fans are talking about the change and praising that the developers actually put the work into the game. Many no longer expected that anything would happen at all.

The developers already promised missing features in February. Now comes another system that players have been waiting for for a long time, skill trees.

When the game was announced, the skill system was supposed to be quite different from Vermintide’s. That didn’t happen and caused criticism and dissatisfaction among fans. Seeing the changes now makes me happy.

Nevertheless, there is skepticism in the community. Some are happy that something is happening, but also say: “I won’t believe it until I see it.” There are also doubts as to how much variation there is actually in the different skill trees.

However, the joy prevails. Even if the revision comes late, Darktide with the update is about what fans wanted for the release.
