Nine people were killed and 23 wounded in Iraq’s autonomous Kurdish region on Wednesday in an artillery attack that Iraq blamed on Turkey.
Prime Minister of Iraq Mustafa al-Kadhimi called the gunfire a blatant violation of sovereignty and warned that Iraq reserves the right to retaliate.
According to the authorities, two of the dead in the artillery concentration that hit the park in the village of Parakhi were children. Among the victims were also tourists from other parts of Iraq. The Iraqi prime minister sent the country’s foreign minister and top security officials to the scene.
There was no confirmed information from the Turkish Ministry of Defense that the country had fired cannons at Iraq on Wednesday.
Turkey launched attacks on northern Iraq in April. According to Turkey, the target is the fighters of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
