9.5 tons of cocaine have been found in a banana shipment in the Dominican Republic.
According to the country’s authorities, the seizure is the largest ever made in the country.
– Several people tried to transfer the cocaine into another container, says the head of communications at the anti-narcotics authority.
A record seizure of nine and a half tons of cocaine has been made in a port outside the Dominican Republic’s capital, Santo Domingo. This was announced by the country’s authorities on Friday.
The cocaine was divided into 320 bags, and was discovered in a load of bananas that arrived at the port in a container.
– According to the first investigations, the container with bananas came here from Guatemala, and several people tried to transfer the cocaine into another container, says Carlos Denvers, head of communications at the anti-narcotics authority.
Was going to Belgium
It is suspected that the drug would be loaded onto a container that would be shipped on to Belgium.
According to Denvers, the crackdown is the largest ever made in the Caribbean, despite the fact that extensive drug smuggling takes place via Caribbean islands from South America to the United States and Europe.
The authorities estimate that the cocaine has a value of 250 million dollars, corresponding to approximately 2.7 million Swedish kronor. At least ten people are being investigated for involvement, TT reports.
