88-year-old doctor released after seven years

Australian surgeon Arthur Kenneth Elliott has been released after seven years in captivity in West Africa. He has now returned to his home country, according to Australia’s foreign minister.

Elliott and his wife were kidnapped in Burkina Faso by jihadists in January 2016. Since the 1970s, the two had run a healthcare facility in the northern city of Djibo, where Elliott worked as a surgeon. The wife was already released after three weeks of captivity.

According to ABC News, no ransom has been paid by the Australian government or the doctor’s family.
