In the past 24 hours, 674 migrants in distress have been rescued and five people found dead by the Italian coast guard. The migrants were taken to a refugee facility on the island of Lampedusa, which has now become overcrowded.
According to the UNHCR, 800 people have died this year trying to cross the Mediterranean.
