The five-day registration period to register as a candidate in Iran’s presidential election has ended, and a total of 80 people have registered, according to Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi.
The election is being held to find a successor to Ebrahim Raisi who died in a helicopter crash.
The conservative Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, speaker of Iran’s parliament, submitted his candidacy on Monday. The Speaker has previously run for the presidency in 2005, 2013 and 2017.
On Sunday, it became known that Iran’s hard-line ex-president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is once again aiming for the presidency.
Those who registered must wait until June 11 to see if their candidacy has been approved.
The election will be held on June 28.
