8 out of 10 young people view their finances differently

The economic situation has changed eight out of ten young adults’ view of finances, according to a recent report from Swedbank. Due to the increasingly strained financial situation, many young adults have rearranged their everyday lives and postponed major purchases to the future.
But also cut back on nuggets of gold in everyday life.

– I would have liked to go to the cinema or go on a short weekend to Sundsvall, but I don’t have the opportunity right now, says Kajsa Bergquist, who is a student at Mittuniversitetet in Östersund.

Kantar Sifo conducted the survey in October on behalf of Swedbank, and 1,641 people between the ages of 18 and 29 participated.

The report shows that the tough economic situation affects young adults in several ways.

Among other things, more and more young people are now prioritizing a good salary, both when choosing education and employers. At the same time, many cut back on nightlife, small purchases and choose cheaper food.

– I’ve started making more “big meals” so it’s enough for the whole week plus I cook a lot more vegetarian, says student Caroline Johansson.

Choose to live at home

More people are also choosing to stay at home longer because of the economic situation, according to the report. And that more people choose to rent rather than buy their home.

– I’ll probably have to keep dreaming about that dream villa. It will probably be later in life, says Joacim Åhlund in Östersund.
