MeinMMO introduces you to games that play similarly to Baldur’s Gate 3 and feel something like that too. Ideal if Larian’s masterpiece has left a void that you want to fill.
What kind of games are these? Here we have made a selection of classic role-playing games or “CRPGs” that you can play on PC, PlayStation and Xbox. There is a selection of the best games of the last few years in all possible settings.
What is important for the games in the list is that they have at least some similarities with Baldur’s Gate 3 – i.e. they are based on Dungeons & Dragons or other “pen & paper” systems, offer turn-based combat or are otherwise strongly reminiscent of the feeling of a role-playing game.
Are turn-based battles not quite your thing? Here you will find alternatives to Baldur’s Gate 3 without turn-based battles.
Here’s how we chose: The list is based on the experience of our authors and editors, some of whom have been working with role-playing games for decades. Baldur’s Gate 3 thrilled almost everyone at MeinMMO and dug up all the old experiences again.
Many of these titles are also among the best-rated games in the genre on Steam etc., but some of them have simply been forgotten. However, we only recommend games that we have already sunk hundreds of hours into.
Pathfinder
The Pathfinder games are based on the Pen & Paper of the same name, which in turn developed from an earlier version of Dungeons & Dragons. Unlike D&D (and also Baldur’s Gate), Pathfinder is much more complex.
You can choose from dozens of classes and even prestige classes, as well as the opportunity to gain additional skills that work regardless of your class. The game is still played in a group with companions and is turn-based.
Kingmaker is the first part of the two games. In the world of Golarion, you are tasked with making an overgrown barony habitable again. You become entangled in ever-increasing political intrigue and in a supernatural plot that pits you against beings from another world. At the same time, you have to manage your empire.
Wrath of the Righteous, or WotR for short, goes one step further. You have to save the entire world from merging with the demon realm. You develop special “legend” powers, but you have to manage at least a little less than in the first part. It’s more about adventure.
Divinity: Original Sin 2
Divinity: Original Sin 2 is the direct predecessor of Baldur’s Gate 3 from Larian. The RPG plays almost identically and many of the lessons Larian learned from Divinity were applied to Baldur’s Gate 3. The game is considered one of the best role-playing games on Steam.
As the chosen one of a god, you have special powers, which are not welcomed by the Inquisition – because they threaten the security of the world. Your task now is to decide what to do with these powers and how you want to use them.
The big difference to Baldur’s Gate 3 is that you don’t play in a D&D system, but in your own set of rules. Although the battles are still turn-based, you have action points and no predetermined number of actions.
If you are interested in Original Sin 2, the predecessor Original Sin (1) and the other Divinity games are also worth playing, although some of them play very differently.

Wasteland 3
In Wasteland 3 you play as a group of law enforcement officers who want to restore order in a world after the nuclear apocalypse. The game is strongly reminiscent of the early Fallout parts and is one of the best games with an apocalyptic setting.
Instead of fireballs and lightning, you fight with flamethrowers and futuristic Tesla cannons or throw grenades. The fights are tactical and you should use cover to avoid giving your opponents easy targets.
As in Baldur’s Gate 3, you can expect a deep story with various branches as well as characters and companions with their own personalities. However, there is no option to start a romance like in Baldur’s Gate 3 or the small conversations between the characters.
Wasteland 3 is ideal if you are looking for a change from the otherwise common fantasy settings in the RPG genre. The predecessors of the series are also recommended.
