70-year-old woman has given birth to twins

A 70-year-old woman in Uganda has given birth to twins after in vitro fertilization. Both the mother and children are said to be doing well.
– She is healthy, she talks and she walks around, says a spokesperson for the hospital.

On Wednesday, 70-year-old Safina Namukwaya gave birth to a boy and a girl via caesarean section at the Women’s Hospital International Facility Center in the capital Kampala, AP reports.
– She is healthy. She is speaking. She walks around the hospital,” says hospital spokesperson Arthur Matsiko.

This is the second successful in vitro fertilization that Namukwaya has undergone. Three years ago, she gave birth to a daughter in the same hospital, also after IVF treatment, according to the news agency.

At 70, Safina Namukwaya is the oldest woman to have given birth at the hospital, whose owner is said to be a prominent gynecologist in the East African region.

But Namukwaya is not the oldest mother of children in the world. In 2019, 73-year-old Mangayamma Yaramati in India made headlines worldwide after giving birth to twins. After several years of trying, she managed to get pregnant with the help of IVF with donated eggs. She thus became the world’s oldest first-time mother, writes BBC.
