In 1954 Ishirô Honda’s classic monster film Godzilla hit the cinemas and since then more than 30 films have been produced with the Kaiju by Studio Toho in Japan alone. Some time has passed since the last Japanese entry, 2016’s excellent Shin Godzilla. This year, the lizard dry spell ends with Godzilla: Minus One, whose teaser trailer was released last week.

Godzilla: Minus One travels back to the beginning of the monster series
This time it is a kind of Godzilla historical film. Because Minus One is set in the 1950s, the time when the first movie was released. The title refers to the era immediately after the end of World War II, when Japan lay in ruins, or as the trailer puts it, “zero”. The invoice is completed when the atomic giant lizard Godzilla enters the scene. Just when you think it couldn’t get any worse than “zero”, “one” is deducted.
The cast for the monster spectacle has not been determined. This time, Takashi Yamazaki, who became known with special effects spectacles such as Space Battleship Yamato and The Eternal Zero, is sitting in the director’s chair.

Godzilla: Minus One
So it could be that we have one more conventional kaiju adventure expected than was the case with the quasi-documentary Shin Godzilla. In the meantime, its creator Hideaki Anno has created the so-called Shin Japan Heroes Universe, whose most recent entry Shin Kamen Rider started in March in Japan.
When is the new Godzilla film coming to Germany?
Godzilla: Minus One launches in Japan in November. There is no German release date yet.
Minus One naturally has no connection to Legendary Pictures’ American MonsterVerse, which includes films such as Godzilla (2014) and Godzilla vs. Kong (2021).
That series continues in theaters next year with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and the Apple TV+ series Godzilla and the Titans.
