Charlotte Baris: 7 million is the number of immigrants living in France. While Gérald Darmanin’s immigration law is being examined by the National Assembly, Loredane Binet, journalist with the video service of L’Express, has been interested in immigration figures in France for almost a century. . But to start, we need a little definition. What do we mean by immigrant?

Loredane Binet: I’ll give you the INSEE definition. It is the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies. He tells us that an immigrant is a person of a foreign nationality, born abroad and who resides in France. This implies one thing: even if an immigrant obtains French nationality at one point, he is still considered an immigrant.
