It’s getting colder and grayer outside – the perfect time of year to retreat to the couch and escape into a good story. What better way to do this than the magical world of Harry Potter? All parts of the main series and two of the spin-offs have been streaming on Amazon Prime Video since mid-November.
This can now also be seen in the top 10 of the most popular films on offer from the streamer. Seven of the eight Harry Potter adventures occupy the charts. Even more than a decade after the final battle against Lord Voldemort took place on screen, the fantasy series has not lost its popularity.
Harry Potter dominates the top 10 on Amazon Prime Video
Last week there were only six Harry Potter films, this week another one was added. It is clear from the top 10 that many Prime subscribers have started a big rewatch and have now even gotten to Harry Potter 7.1. Only 7.2 is still missing from the top 10.
Now we can be curious to see whether the bombastic finale and the spin-offs about the fantastic beasts will follow next week. Theoretically, the Wizarding World could fill the entire top 10. The only film that is currently not in the Prime subscription is Dumbledore’s Secrets.
The competition never sleeps, especially when it comes to The Grinch. Christmas films that trigger nostalgic feelings are very popular these days. The Ron Howard directed Dr. Seuss film adaptation with Jim Carrey in the lead role is likely to be an absolute classic for many and should definitely not be missed in December.
Harry Potter is and remains the biggest fantasy franchise
The eleven films from the Wizarding World (Harry Potter 1-8 and Fantastic Beasts 1-3) grossed almost $10 billion at the box office worldwide. This is followed by Middle-earth with around 6 billion, Pirates of the Caribbean with 4.5 billion, Shrek with 4 billion and Twilight with 3.4 billion US dollars.
The future of Harry Potter still doesn’t take place in the cinema, but on television. HBO and Warner are working on a remake of the Harry Potter story in the form of a series. One season is planned for each book. However, it could still be two to three years before this mammoth project gets started.
