EXCLUDED. The YouGov survey for Linternaute on the popular primary gives the measure of the aspirations of left-wing sympathizers to see a rally formed. They are 65% to wish that the left-wing candidates line up behind the winner of this consultation.
This is a fact established by several opinion polls in recent weeks: the voters on the left are in a large majority eager for a common candidacy in this presidential election. But since Jean-Luc Mélenchon and Yannick Jadot closed the door to any primary, the horizon of a first-round alliance seems very unlikely. So what about the popular primary, this consultation scheduled for the end of January, and which aims to bring out a single candidacy? It is already not really a “primary” – there is no confrontation of ideas, exchanges or organized debates, nor a process framed by a political formation – but this consultation makes people talk about it. First because it is presented as the last issue for a union, then because the former Keeper of the Seals, Christiane Taubira, agreed to rely on it to launch her presidential candidacy. Note that those registered for this consultation can vote for the former minister, but also for Jean-Luc Mélenchon, Yannick Jadot and Anne Hidalgo (while they do not wish to participate).
The YouGov survey for Linternaute on the popular primary gives the measure of the aspirations of left-wing sympathizers to see a rally formed. To the question “In your opinion, should the left-wing candidates in the 2022 presidential election submit to the result of the popular primary?”, 65% of left-wing sympathizers answer yes, 20% answer no and 15% say not knowing. Asked to respondents of all political persuasions, the results differ: 49% answer yes, 24% answer no and 27% say they do not know. Recall that the candidates on the left have indicated that they do not grant any legitimacy to this process. Jean-Luc Mélenchon even asked that his name be removed from this consultation.
Still, respondents consider that this popular primary has little chance of leading to a rally. To the question “In your opinion, can the organization of the popular primary lead to the union of the left for the upcoming presidential election?”, 56% of French people answer no, only 15% answer yes, (31 % do not know and 8% say they have never heard of this popular primary). The responses of left-wing sympathizers are substantially the same (59% no, 26% yes, 11% don’t know, 4% haven’t heard of this primary).
Methodology: the survey was carried out among 1,026 people representative of the French national population aged 18 and over (smaller panel for “left sympathizers”). The survey was conducted online, on the YouGov France proprietary panel from January 18 to 19, 2022. To find out more about this study, contact YouGov here
