Paolo Macchiarini came to the Karolinska Institute and University Hospital in 2010. He performed artificial trachea transplants on eight patients in Sweden, Russia and the USA, and seven of them died. Karolinska suffered a crisis of confidence, and Macchiarini has been accused of research fraud, causing the death of another and serious assault.
