The big theme of World of Warcraft: Dragonflight are dragons. Among them are a few specimens that you should definitely know before you embark on the adventure.

What is it about dragons in WoW? Dragons are extremely strong and powerful beings in the world of WoW. The dragons are divided into different swarms, each (usually) led by a dragon aspect. They originated from the proto-dragons through the work of the titans and were used as guardians of the world of Azeroth. Nevertheless, tragic events continued to occur, including the betrayal of Deathwing and the extreme behavior of Malygos during the Nexus War.

Alexstrasza

The mighty Alexstrasza is the leader of the red dragonflight and embodies the aspect of life. She and her crush watch over all life in the world and creation itself. Alexstrasza enjoys enormous respect from the other dragons and was also made Dragon Queen by the titans at the time.

Alexstrasza is therefore still one of the original dragon aspects that once emerged from the proto-dragons. Despite her immense power, Alexstrasza is merciful and self-sacrificing. She does everything to protect the world of Azeroth and life on it. Her residence is Wyrmrest Temple, and when she assumes a humanoid form, she appears as a High Elf clad in red.

Kalecgos

This dragon leads the blue flight after the death of its predecessor and mentor, Malygos. When Malygos started the fateful Nexus War, Kalecgos turned away from him and then took over his position after Malygos’ end.

A powerful sorcerer, Kalecgos is a worthy leader of the blue flight that has always held the watch over magic and leylines. Kalecgos prefers half-elf form when assuming humanoid form.

Nozdormu

This ancient dragon is the leader of the bronze flight and, along with Alexstrasza, the last remaining dragon aspect once raised by the titans themselves. Nozdormu is the guardian of time and he and his crush are always busy keeping time flowing.

In Dragonflight, Nozdormu is responsible for the Dracthyr leaving their home at the end of their prologue quest and warning the world of the return of the terrible Raszageth.

Merithra

A powerful green dragon, Merithra is the de facto leader of the green swarm. However, her position is not secure, as her mother Ysera was once devoured by the nightmare and had to be killed by necessity. She has since been resurrected, but is currently unable to leave the Ardenwald from the shadow lands.

Merithra, meanwhile, guides the green swarm as best she can and regularly makes attempts to increase the swarm’s power. When traveling in humanoid form, she appears as a night elf.

Sabellian

This powerful black dragon is the son of the horrible Dragon Aspect, Deathwing, and is claiming leadership of the black flight. But this position is also claimed by his rival Wrathion.

Wrathion is his nephew and grandson of Deathwing. The conflict between the two dragons for supremacy over the black dragons plays an important role in Dragonflight.

Raszageth

Raszageth is a proto-dragon and a leader of the primalists. This makes her the current villain in Dragonflight. She was imprisoned for 20,000 years after Neltharion (later Deathwing) defeated her with the help of the old gods.

Just before the start of Dragonflight, her faithful primalist disciples free Raszageth from her dungeon, awakening the slumbering Dracthyr as well. Raszageth can only be scared away by the appearance of Nozdormu.
