$587M MMO Raises Price for 3 Popular Ships and Probably Campaign – Has Trouble with Fans

The MMO Star Citizen has now raised 587 million through “donations”. But now there is criticism of the business practices of the developers in the forums: The single-player campaign “Squadron 42” has disappeared from the store for weeks, and a price increase is apparently being prepared. The price of 3 virtual spaceships has been increased without warning – fans find this all highly suspect. Star Citizen reacts and temporarily lowers the prices of the ships again.

What’s going on with the single player campaign?

  • Star Citizen is in itself an SF MMORPG that will eventually become the home of umpteen space pilots. The project has been in development since 2010.
  • However, Squadron 42 is a single-player campaign for which Hollywood stars have been committed. The campaign aims to please fans of Wing Commander, the series that made Chris Roberts famous.
  • There is no release date for either Star Citizen or Squadron 42. Squadron 42 was originally planned as part of Star Citizen, but it has now been decoupled.

Squadron 42 disappears from the shop – CIG conceals the reason for a long time

This is the change now: Squadron 42 has always been available through Star Citizen’s sales page, either on its own or as part of a bundle.

Since May 18, however, it has disappeared from all offers (via mop). Squadron 42 can no longer be purchased.

CIG left it like that for a good 10 days without explaining it in detail.

But now, in a post a week old, a community manager has come forward (via rsi) and said, “Squadron 42 has been removed from the store at its current price and will be returning at a later date. This change is not meant to mean anything significant other than expect a price change.”

What’s being criticized? Criticizing people on redditt:

The answer is “intentionally” hidden. By replying to an old post, the community manager probably wants to make sure that as few people as possible notice the suspected price increase

In addition, there would be no reason at all for changing the prices – especially since there is still no release time window

Star Citizen increases prices for 3 ships, then temporarily withdraws increases

Which prices have been increased? CIG has also officially confirmed the increase in the prices of some virtual ships.

Ships like The Avenger Titan went from $55 to $60, the Cutlass Black went from $100 to $110. The price of the “Vanguard Hoplite” has also increased by $5.

Here, too, fans criticize that the price increases came without warning and for no reason. The price increase was only noticed when it was already active.

Fans demand an explanation. One fan says: “Because they can. That is the explanation.”

The developers say (via rsi) that they would have said that the team would always regularly look at the value of offers and make price changes. These adjustments have now been made. It would be preferable to announce this in advance and will do so.

In this case, the prices will be reset to the old level and then finally increased on June 27th.

In addition to criticism, fans also show understanding

Do people understand that too?? Yes, there are some who also find these price increases quite good. Apparently, these are either people who support CIG from the bottom of their hearts, or people who apparently see the ships as investment objects:

  • As one user puts it: The prices were intentionally reduced at the beginning to help the developers make money until the game was released. CIG would have always communicated that.
  • Another says: The prices reflect the value, not the sum of their costs – so it’s safe to assume that the man bought some spaceships with the intention of later selling them off at a higher price.
  • So fans with so much understanding of price increases are what we wish for as a game studio:
