53 dead after fires in Hawaii

At least 53 people have died in the wildfires raging on the Hawaiian island of Maui, according to state governor Josh Green. The death toll is likely to rise further.

More than 1,000 buildings have been destroyed in the fires that are still raging in the area surrounding the historically significant coastal town of Lahaina, where almost nothing has been saved.

According to US President Joe Biden, the fires in Hawaii are a natural disaster of enormous magnitude. He has already released federal emergency efforts for the archipelago, primarily for Maui.
