When women are between 20-24 years old, the risk is greatest to be subjected to violence in a close relationship. But even in the youngest, between 16-19 years, the vulnerability is great. There, 16 percent of the girls say they were subjected to violence by a boyfriend.
Despite this, experts alert that the violence in young relationships is not taken seriously.
– On the one hand, there is a risk that violence in young people’s couple relationships will be trivialized and not taken as seriously, and therefore they miss signs that a person is exposed to or expose another to party violence, says Shilan Caman, a researcher at the Karolinska Institute and analyst at the Police Authority.
Aftonbladet’s long -standing review killed women counts all women killed by a man they have or had a relationship with.
The review shows how 372 women have been killed between the years 2000-2024.
Among these women, 50 were never 25 years old. The youngest killed was a 15-year-old girl who in 2004 was held hostage in an apartment in Malmö before she was murdered by her seven-year-old boyfriend who refused to accept that she ended.
The review shows how 16 of the women killed were between 15-19 years old and 34 were between 20-24 years old. The violence against the young women is both similar to what affects the elderly – but there are also things that separate it:
Check just as among the women over 25 years of age who are killed, the deadly violence often occurs in connection with the man believes that the woman should leave him, that she ended or that they have already separated. The same pattern can be seen among the young women – though even more. In at least 29 of the 50 cases among the young victims, the woman wanted to end the relationship or the relationship had already ended. This corresponds to 58 % among the young victims. Among those who were older, 42 % of the victims had separated from the perpetrator or said she wanted it.
Check the most common place that women are killed on is in the home. Even among the young victims, it is the most common place. However, a larger proportion of young women are killed outdoors when compared to the victims older than 25 years.
– It is also more common for girls to be strangled to death. There are also differences in the type of substance that is consumed and abused, where drug use is more common among the perpetrators and the victims of deadly partner violence against girls, says Shilan Caman.
Check the warning signals have often been there, just as in the cases where the victims were older. 19-year-old Tova, who would soon take the student, was subjected to long-term violence and extreme control of his boyfriend. She wrote about the terror in her diary: “He says that if I end, he kills me, I dare not chance”. When she came home blown away one evening, her parents got Tova to tell about the violence and the parents reported the boyfriend police. But the police did not move on with the investigation. In 2019, Tova’s body was found in a wheelbarrow on the bottom of a lake, one month before the student celebration would take place.

Check the violence against the young women is relatively constant: every year – except in 2011 and 2014 – at least one young woman who has been under 25 has been killed by a man she had a relationship with. Many years there have been more than one victim: in 2016, for example, four young women were murdered by a man or boyfriend. One of these was Marzieh, 20, who was found buried in a forest area. The killer, a significantly older man with whom she had been married, had previously said that he would kill her if she was unfaithful.
Check 26 of the perpetrators was between 16-24 years old, the others were older. The oldest perpetrator was a then 48-year-old man who shot his 21-year-old girlfriend Lena with a shotgun in 2006.
Check 13 of the 50 young women had become mothers – in ten of the cases it was the child’s father who killed them. One of them was the new mother Siri, who was 20 years old to death by the Children’s Father. The murder was preceded by many warning signals, Siri had alerted to midwives, doctors and psychiatry about his fear of his boyfriend – without anyone acting against him.
Shilan Caman thinks that society needs to be better at preventing and fighting violence in young couple relationships.
– Partly adapt information about support and possible efforts to the target group in such a way that they can relate to what society has to offer. Then actors who specifically meet young people in their work should be much more involved in the work against violence close relationships, she says.
