The twist in Bioshock is being prepared from the start. Shortly after entering the underwater city of Rapture, we come into contact with Atlas, which gives us instructions from now on. Each of them begins with the wording “Would you be so friendly”.
After about two thirds of the season, it is revealed that the protagonist Jack is the son of the entrepreneur and Rapture boss Andrew Ryan. Even more: Jack was genetically manipulated and performs any command without resistance that begins with “Would you be so friendly”.
The ingenious thing about the twist is that it not only works at the narrative level, but also critically questions the actions of us players. In games we usually blindly follow the instructions of NPCs or our quest log. We rarely question them. Bioshock shows that we rarely use our free will in games. Instead, we do what the developers want from us. Incidentally, a new game will soon be released by Bioshock creatures Ken Levine.
