There are many myths and misconceptions about hot flashes. But what is the truth? An obstetrician-gynecologist takes a look at one of the most common symptoms during menopause.
While people are talking about menopause, there are still many preconceived ideas. Interviewed for the Cleveland Clinic media, obstetrician-gynecologist Claudia Mason debunks certain beliefs and reviews five preconceived ideas.
Myth #1: Hot flashes burn calories
Fake. At the risk of disappointing some, hot flashes do not allow you to eliminate the calories from a pastry, for example.Hot flashes don’t burn calories”, confirms Dr. Mason. For this you will have to go to the gym or move”she adds.
Misconception #2: Hot flashes are necessarily linked to menopause
Fake. According to the obstetrician-gynecologist, you don’t have to be menopausal to have hot flashes. Many people experience premenopausal symptoms years before their last period.
Myth #3: Hot flashes cause fever
Fake. Although hot flashes make you feel warm, they are different from fever, which indicates an increase in body temperature above normal.
Myth #4: Supplements, such as magnesium, can help relieve hot flashes
Fake. Many supplements and herbs, such as magnesium and black cohosh, have been studied for their possible role in managing hot flashes. But to date, these studies have been inconclusive.
Misconception #5: Hot flashes can make you dizzy
It’s true, but it’s rare. Dizziness is a possible symptom of hot flashes, but it is not a common symptom.During a hot flash, the blood vessels in your chest and face dilate in an attempt to get rid of some of that heat.”explains Dr. Mason. If enough blood flows to your face, you may experience low blood pressure, which can cause temporary dizziness.”
If your hot flashes frequently cause dizziness or nausea, talk to a healthcare professional.
