As the automotive industry, we are not ready for the Istanbul earthquake.
Aşin Automobile General Manager Okan Erdem, who stated that transportation is also of great importance in a possible earthquake, where the issue of housing with earthquake resistance is the most important issue, said that the automotive industry is not adequately prepared for the earthquake. Erdem noted that many institutions and individuals refrain from taking out insurance due to the increasing motor insurance and compulsory traffic insurance policy prices; “Our awareness of being insured was already low. The rising policy prices due to inflation, the increase in spare parts and vehicle prices started to prevent people from taking out insurance and the rate is decreasing day by day. There are approximately 5 million vehicles in Istanbul and only 2-3 out of 10 vehicles are insured. When buildings are damaged, a significant portion of these vehicles will also be damaged and they are not covered by any insurance. Every vehicle is a national wealth, total awareness should be raised on this issue.” said.

Erdem reminded that as a result of the researches carried out by the IMM and the Kandilli Observatory, there is a prediction that 50 thousand buildings will be severely damaged in a good scenario in Istanbul; “ After the disaster, both private, commercial and public vehicles will all have an important role, but there will be a need to repair the damaged and repairable vehicles of these vehicles. Auto services also have great shortcomings in earthquake resistance, many services operate in 40-50 years old buildings. There is a risk of not even finding a service to repair the vehicles. From the public to the representatives of the automotive sector, from municipalities to insurance companies, from our citizens to all sector employees, we all need to be aware of disasters and take the necessary precautions as soon as possible.” he said.
