5 dogs the vet would never own – one is controversial

5 dogs the vet would never own one is

Fancy a dog? Then you shouldn’t look at these five dog breeds, at least if you ask the vet Amir Anwari.

In a clip on Tiktok with millions of views, which the Independent also wrote about, he lists dog breeds that, as a veterinarian, he would never get himself.

The vet opens up for discussion

He justifies his choices by saying that the breeds may seem perfect at first, but that many dog buyers are not aware that they often come with expensive veterinary costs or uncomfortable changes in their everyday life.

The goal of the video is to educate future dog owners – but he also opens up for discussion if owners of the mentioned dog breeds are of a different opinion than himself.

Here are the dog breeds Anwary mentions in his viral video:

  • Dachshund. “This could be controversial,” says the vet, as the dachshund is such a favourite.

His argument as to why he himself would never own a dachshund is that they are very stubborn, can “bark all night if they want to” and often tend to get separation anxiety from their owners.

  • French bulldog. This breed is also very popular, but Anwary says it has several medical issues that owners need to be aware of.

“If it’s not breathing difficulties, then it’s a skin problem. If it’s not a skin problem, then it’s a back problem,” says Anwary.

  • Belgian Shepherd and Border Collie. Anwary believes that both breeds are very demanding and require constant stimulation – otherwise there is a risk that they will be unhappy.

“They’re always on, they need constant physical and mental stimulation, and I just couldn’t give a border collie what it needs to be happy,” he says in the clip.

  • Labrador. Yes, you actually read that right.

“I know you’re going to say, ‘Are you crazy? Labradors are amazing,’ and yes, they are,” says Anwary.

What makes him, after all, list Labradors on the list of breeds he would not buy himself, is its large appetite to say the least – and the health risks it brings (not least for dog owners who have difficulty standing).

“What do you get if you cross a dog that loves to eat just about anything, with a dog that gets fat from just about everything? You get a dog that is constantly overweight,” says the veterinarian.
