In line with menstrual panties, menstrual swimsuits promise greater freedom of movement during your period, even when it’s time to swim. Here are some things to consider when choosing the model that will follow you all summer long.
After menstrual panties, which in just a few years have become the essential accessory during periods, many underwear brands now offer menstrual swimsuits. To wear freely on the beach or by the pool, even when you are indisposed.
For those who are wondering, the menstrual swimsuit looks like a swimsuit, very classic (in one or two pieces) but its design is made to prevent any leakage of menstrual flow as well as the bad smells.
The fabric is generally made up of 3 or 4 layers:
- A top layerin contact with the skin, designed to be soft, hyper-absorbent and quickly drain the flow to the next layer.
- A middle layer which absorbs blood and captures it.
- A waterproof layer preventing water from entering and menstrual flow from exiting the swimsuit.
This allows you to enjoy a normal day at the beach during your period.
Why choose a menstrual swimsuit?
There are several reasons that visibly appeal to French women:
- Freedom (and the practical side): while 74% of women have already refused to swim because of their periods (according to an IFOP survey conducted in 2021), the menstrual swimsuit allows you to live your summer day like another one. And without having to think about which hygienic protections to take or use.
- It is reusable, more ecological and economical than the various protections commonly used for bathing.
- It is perfect for young girls who have recently started menstruating and who are not comfortable with using a tampon. In addition, the younger generation is very sensitive to the pollution caused by disposable menstrual protection and fears the toxic shock caused by prolonged use of a tampon.
- It is often designed in non-controversial materials which in fact respect health, vaginal flora and the environment in general.
What to consider when choosing your jersey?
Today, many brands have launched menstrual swimwear. The choice is therefore vast. Here are some criteria to take into account to offer you the model that will suit you best.
- The level of absorption : adapt your choice according to your flow. Because yes, certain swimsuits are more suitable for light or moderate flows;
- The type of jersey : stay close to your preferences. A two-piece swimsuit, a one-piece, sporty, or low-cut… the main thing is to feel good and comfortable. So choose according to your feeling! ;
- The size : keep in mind that a well-fitting jersey will provide better protection;
- The material : opt for a comfortable, absorbent and water-resistant material;
- The price : there are swimsuits for all budgets. But a quality jersey will often last longer over time;
- The country of manufacture : this remains important for some buyers.
All that remains is to choose your swimming spot.
