Exploration – Valheim

What kind of game is this? Valheim is Viking survival for up to 10 players. You only start with a cloth shirt, fight your way through the rough world in the Nordic setting and rise to become a celebrated Viking warrior.

With its fluid combat system, many biomes and bosses, Valheim was able to celebrate a decent hype at the beginning of 2021 and was immediately considered one of the best survival games. The graphics are more functional, but you can change the landscape similar to Minecraft. In addition, fantastic Viking villages can be built.

The goal of the game is to find and kill the big bosses of the world. Each boss opens up a new biome with new materials that improve your crafting options.

Valheim also shines when it comes to the building system

Why exploration? Valheim offers procedurally generated open worlds – each map is different, but can also be selected by seed. The game challenges you to adventure to explore the big worlds and find hidden clues to the bosses.

The gameplay loop always alternates between:

  • We defeated a boss and are exploring a new biome
  • We know where the next boss is and improve our equipment
  • In order to develop fresh resources, you constantly search new areas. You even have to travel across the vast ocean and can build portals between your settlements.

Price and reviews on Steam: Valheim costs 19.99 euros in Early Access and has 95% positive ratings (as of March 2nd, 2023 via Steam) – available in the Xbox Game Pass.

    Base building – Raft

What kind of game is this? Raft is raft survival and should be played with a maximum of 8 players. You start on a small platform that can hardly be called a “ship” and use flotsam to build a handsome home on the sea.

In Raft you are constantly surrounded by water and explore an almost deserted earth. You visit islands for new resources and follow the clues to learn more about the history of this flooded world.

The goal of the game is to find and complete all of the major story islands. Incidentally, you build a fabulous ship with which you sail the world’s oceans.

Raft is the best survival game 2022 on Steam because it does 3 things completely different from the competition

Why base building? Sons of the Forest offered an interesting change with its free building system and you get something similar in Raft. Instead of finding a halfway leveled piece of land as usual, you build your raft on the sea.

This is very refreshing and an exciting approach to base building. Any survival fan who likes to use the building tools should give Raft a try – solo, however, might be tiring as there’s always a lot to do. But enemies rarely annoy you, apart from the nice shark.

Price and reviews on Steam: Raft costs 19.99 euros and has 93% positive ratings (as of March 1st, 2023 via Steam).

    Story – Grounded

What kind of game is this? Grounded is garden survival for up to 4 players. You end up in your garden as a shrunken mini-human and somehow have to get back to normal size. For this you build a base from the typical materials of a garden and explore the backyard thoroughly.

The setting has a very special charm and it feels refreshingly new to be up to mischief in a familiar, yet unfamiliar environment. You’ll meet thieving ants, house-sized ladybugs and… yes, unfortunately, spiders too. However, you can make the critters look different if you hate spiders.

The goal of the game is to complete the story and get you back to normal size.

A good vantage point is also important in grounded bases

Why story? You have a clear thread in Grounded that you must follow to advance in the game. First you find out what’s going on, and then you set about getting back to human size.

This is generally a bit stricter than Sons of the Forest. Grounded is therefore ideal if you want clear instructions for co-op survival. However, Raft is also excellent for this.

Price and reviews on Steam: Grounded costs 39.99 euros and has 89% positive ratings (as of 03/02/2023 via Steam) – available in the Xbox Game Pass.

Combat – 7 Days to Die

What kind of game is this? 7 Days to Die is zombie survival with an MMO approach. You can create servers with many players, but you can also experience everything in co-op, apart from PvP. You start hand in mouth, collecting, building and crafting your way to the top of the food chain.

7 Days to Die is based on voxel graphics – similar to Minecraft. You can dismantle, rebuild, terraform and whatever other ideas you have. There is also an extensive building system based on placed frames that you fill with wood, stone and later concrete.

The aim of the game is to survive as long as possible. It also plays a bit like a tower defense game. The presence of your base attracts more zombies every week and a mega wave starts every 7 days.

In addition, the procedurally generated open worlds invite you to explore. Since the zombies run at night and are much stronger, you need a shelter for the night. This can make exciting tours including overnight stays possible.

Anti-zombie skyscraper for lots of fall damage with undead hopper on ground floor

Why fight? As in Sons of the Forest, you use melee and ranged combat in 7 Days to Die. You are constantly busy evicting the rotten neighbors from your property. An RPG system ensures that your strength constantly increases. New recipes bring variety.

The difficulty slowly builds up. You can still manage the first “Blood Moon Night” with a bow and arrow. After a few weeks, the next ones become a test of survival.

7 Days to Die offers a lot of scope, but can still be a bit too big, especially for newcomers to the genre.

Price and reviews on Steam: 7 Days to Die costs EUR 22.99 in Early Access and has 88% positive ratings (as of March 2nd, 2023 via Steam) – available in the Xbox Game Pass. The console version is a stripped down game and will no longer receive updates.
