Every monster in Pokémon GO has its own unique story. We at MeinMMO are introducing you to the ice and psycho-Pokémon Rossana, just in time for the Christmas season, and are showing you 4 cool facts that you should definitely know about the monster.
The Christmas event is currently taking place for the trainers in Pokémon GO. But a typical Christmas Pokémon is missing: Rossana. It is one of the most interesting monsters, about which there is a lot to report. We have summarized 4 cool facts for you.
The article originally appeared for Christmas 2021. We published it again on MeinMMO for Christmas 2022.
What kind of Pokemon is Rossana? Rossana is an Ice and Psychic-type Pokémon from the first generation of games. It is the only evolution of Kussilla and is found exclusively in the female form.
Rossana and Christmas
Even though the Christmas event in Pokémon GO is currently running without Rossana, the Ice and Psychic Pokémon have a lot to do with this annual celebration. First and foremost, their habitat already shows that they like it rather cool. That would actually fit perfectly with the season of origin. It mainly lives in ice caves.
That’s not the only connection the Ice and Psychic Pokémon have for Christmas, though. In the anime, it works for none other than Santa Claus. It makes its debut in the series in the episode “Rossana Odyssey”.
Thus Santa Claus at the North Pole is supported by numerous Rossana. However, while cleaning Santa’s boots, one of these Pokémon is blown off by an ice floe and meets Ash and his friends.
And Team Rocket is also up to mischief in this episode and tries to catch the Rossana. The reason for this is an experience from Jessie’s childhood. Accordingly, Jessie is convinced that Rossana is Santa Claus and used to steal her favorite doll. However, Rossana only wanted to take it to Santa Claus for repairs.
Maybe she’ll help him this year too and can’t be there for the Christmas market event in Pokémon GO.
The appearance of Rossana
Anyone who has seen the episode “Rossana’s Odyssey” will have noticed that the monster now has a slightly different appearance. The reason for this was a complaint from the African-American author Carole Boston Weatherford.
In the first episodes of the anime, Rossana has black skin, big lips, and blond hair. The author saw a connection to the racial stereotype of a black woman, which is why she published an article called “Politically Incorrect Pokémon” (via greensboro.com).
This resulted in Rossana’s appearance being retrospectively changed from black to purple. In addition, scenes of Rossana’s original appearance were removed in the US. Twitter user TheCapnStache shows a comparison of the design in a post:

Another feature that sets Rossana apart from other monsters is communication. The main thing that stands out in Rossana is the rhythmic movement, but her speech also follows a certain rhythm. However, she speaks a language that is incomprehensible to the viewer, but which is nevertheless reminiscent of human language.
And her scream is also something very special. That’s how her call sounds for a full 2,238 seconds, making it the longest in the Pokémon world (via bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net).
A surprise in battle
But you shouldn’t underestimate Rossana. At first glance, it is more reminiscent of a lovable lady, but the Pokémon has a lot on the box: It can convince with its high attack value and offers a really strong move set with Ice Breath and Avalanche. It is one of the best ice attackers in Pokémon GO.
In the GO battle league, however, you should rather rely on other monsters, because Rossana is less likely to convince there (via pvpoke.com).
