4.4 million in costs for incorrectly parked e-scooters

Despite well-spaced parking spaces around Stockholm, the municipality has to spend a lot of money for incorrectly parked e-scooters.
During the summer months of 2024, it is about a cost of SEK 4.4 million, writes Nyhetsbyrån Sirén.
Here you will find the list of the worst areas in Stockholm.

During June, July and August, the municipality moved approximately 10,500 incorrectly parked electric scooters, according to the City of Stockholm.

– The problem is greatest in the summer. Then there are more people who move outside and use the electric scooters, says Malinda Flodman, press officer at the traffic office in the city of Stockholm.

At the same time, according to Flodman, it is a step in the right direction.

– It is actually significantly fewer than last summer when we moved approx. 14,000 electric scooters. It’s going slowly, but they see a trend towards more and more people parking the e-scooters better and better.

4.4 million in costs

If the city of Stockholm moves a bicycle a shorter distance, it costs SEK 250. If they need to take care of a wrongly parked e-scooter and drive it to the staging area in Spånga, it costs SEK 500. In total, the costs have amounted to SEK 4.4 million during the summer months, writes Nyhetsbyrån Sirén.

– Of course, we want as many people as possible to park their e-scooters in a way that keeps them out of the way. We try to make it as easy as possible so that you always have close to a place where you can park your electric scooter in the correct way, says Malinda Flodman.

The companies must pay

It is the electric scooter companies that must pay the city of Stockholm the cost of incorrectly parked electric scooters. They have been invoiced, and are usually good about paying. There can be consequences if they don’t behave.

– If we have a company that has not paid its fees, we would have had to weigh that in when we assess whether it is appropriate to give them permission for a new period.

Two years ago, new rules came in which state that an electric scooter must be parked in a special electric scooter parking lot or bicycle parking lot, and not on the footpath, street or cycle path. This has meant that the companies, in turn, have made higher demands on customers and that wrong parking has decreased.

Here are the streets with the most incorrectly parked e-scooters
