36 online games on PS4 and PS5 that you can play without PS Plus

You usually need a PS Plus subscription if you want to play games online on your PS4 or PS5. But there are also a number of exceptions that you can play without a subscription.

What kind of list is this? In this list we introduce you to lots of games that you can play on your PS4 or PS5 without a PS Plus subscription. Most of the games on the list are free and rely on in-game purchases as a financing model.

At the moment (February 2024) you can play 36 games on your console without a subscription. You can find the games sorted alphabetically on our list. Also note that you can also play most PS4 games on your PS5, thanks to backwards compatibility.

We didn’t include a few games (such as Switchblade) because these titles hardly have any active players anymore or no longer receive support from the developers.

We have updated the article for the new year and added more games that you can play without PS Plus.

Apex Legends

What is Apex Legends? You play either as a team of 2 or 3 in a battle royale. A total of 20 or 30 teams compete against each other. Whichever team is left standing at the end wins.

Apex is a mix of Overwatch and Warzone, the battle royale mode of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The game has many classic BR elements, but the characters are also different. So each player has a different hero who has different skills, such as a healing drone or running faster when attacked.

Apex Legends costs €0.25 on the PS Store, but only because it is 18+. This is similar to Warframe.

Who is Apex Legends suitable for?

  • Players who want to make the most of their time, because in Apex the rounds start very quickly.
  • Fans of games like Fortnite and Overwatch alike, because Apex offers both good BR elements and hero gameplay.
  • Players who like a lot of action and quick battles, because Apex’s map is quite small and many fights are inevitable.

    Brawlhalla

    What is Brawlhalla? In this game you can virtually fight with your friends. The game structure is reminiscent of Super Smash Bros. and works similarly.

    In the 2D platform brawler you get to choose from different weapons, such as blasters or axes, and can then beat each other up. You have over 50 characters to choose from and you can also use guest stars like Lara Croft or Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

    Who is Brawlhalla suitable for?

  • For the whole family with children aged 12 and over – the game is in a comic style and is easy to get started with.
  • Fans of Super Smash Bros. who don’t own a Switch or are looking for variety.
  • Players who are looking for something to do on the side – The fights are fast and action-packed and you don’t have to invest hours in the game.

    Call of Duty: Warzone 2

    What is Call of Duty: Warzone? This is the Battle Royale of Call of Duty. Warzone started out as a spin-off of Modern Warfare, but then broke away and has since been available for free to all players.

    In CoD Warzone you compete against other players or teams on a huge map. Toxic smoke shrinks the map more and more and in the end the last player to survive wins.

    CoD Warzone uses realistic content. The weapons are realistic and new updates regularly bring new weapons or features into the game.

    CoD Warzone costs 25 cents in the PS Store because it cannot be offered for free as a game for ages 18 and over.

    Who is Call of Duty: Warzone suitable for?

  • Fans of particularly realistic games – The graphics are strong and the feel of the game is reminiscent of real battles in many places. There is hardly a more realistic alternative, especially among shooters.
  • Shooter fans, because CoD Warzone is considered one of the best shooter games currently on the market and scores with strong gameplay.
  • Group players, because here you are often only successful if you play together cleverly and coordinate well.
