On May 30, the police were alerted to a bloody man lying on the ground outside and when the patrol arrived they found a man with a machete standing next to the victim – a person he had known since he was 14 years old.
The police were able to quickly establish that the victim had stab wounds to the back of the head, the leg and the arm. The injuries caused heavy blood loss but did not prove to be life-threatening.
The man with the machete – who is 35 years old – has claimed in questioning that he tried to prevent a robbery with the machete, when the other man allegedly tried to steal his television.
Claims emergency protection
The 35-year-old admits assault but believes he acted in self-defence.
– He comes into my home, hits me and steals my TV. I felt threatened yes, the man tells in interrogation, and describes how he then takes out a machete from under the bed and follows the other man, whom he calls his friend.
– When he lies there, the threat was averted and I didn’t hurt him anymore. If I had dealt a punch, I would have gone to the dung iron, continues the 35-year-old.
The man is now sentenced to eight years in prison for attempted murder.
He is also convicted of assaulting a civil servant, threatening a civil servant and violence against a civil servant after, among other things, biting a police officer on the finger.
