The Pirates of the Caribbean series turned into a notable one in the 2000s Blockbuster high flyer – at a time when the pirate film had fallen into disrepute as a box office poison. The first part turned out to be a surprise success and grossed $654 million. A value that was subsequently far exceeded.

From part 2 onwards, the action-packed adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) danced around billion mark. But then Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge came along and brought down the reliable cinema giant. To this day, the series has not recovered from the hustle and bustle caused by Part 5 six years ago.

The fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film tries everything possible to match the previous films. A flashback to the past with a young Jack Sparrow, the return of Orlando Bloom as Will Turner and a heist sequence in which an entire bank is dragged through a port city: In the end even the ocean splits before our eyes. But the film was not a resounding success.

Pirates of the Caribbean 5 starring Johnny Depp failed to live up to expectations and now the series is in chaos

Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge played only 794 million US dollars. Of course, that sounds like a lot at first. However, we must remember that with such an expensive production another billion-dollar hit expected became. The budget devoured 230 million US dollars, and there is even talk of 320 million US dollars. And that doesn’t include marketing costs.

In order to be profitable, a blockbuster of this size has to gross two to three times as much, according to the rule of thumb. If we look at the numbers from Box Office Mojo, the film is theoretically coming with a black eye. Six years later, the sequel hinted at in the post-credit scene is still not concrete. Salazar’s revenge has plunged the Pirates of the Caribbean series into franchise chaos.

The box office result of part 5 is a clear indication that the films no longer self-perpetuating are. Even the prospect of the return of Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann and Bill Nighy as Davy Jones failed to spark exuberant enthusiasm, so that in the meantime it was even considered bringing a completely new Pirates of the Caribbean film to the big screen with Barbie star Margot Robbie .

As of December 2023, the future of the series is uncertain. Although producer Jerry Bruckheimer occasionally gives vague updates on one potential Pirates of the Caribbean 6 a further sequel to the fantasy adventure has not yet been officially announced. Last but not least, the negative headlines surrounding Johnny Depp overshadowed future Pirates of the Caribbean plans. The series is in blockbuster limbo.
