32 billion euros for health? Gabriel Attal’s sleight of hand – L’Express

32 billion euros for health Gabriel Attals sleight of hand

Abracadabra… And here we have 32 billion euros for health. While Gabriel Attal has been affected since his appointment as “acute fidget”, the new tenant of Matignon is making more promises. In Dijon, alongside Catherine Vautrin, the new Minister of Labor, Health and Solidarity, the young Prime Minister announced 32 billion additional investments in the health system over the next five years. Damn, that’s a lot of money. As a former Minister of Public Accounts, Gabriel Attal knows presentation tips… and communication inside out.

Nothing new, in fact, in this thirty billion. Just money already announced by her predecessor and voted through 49.3 in the National Assembly. Thus, the multi-year planning law for public finances, presented in the fall and sent to Brussels, details expenditure by the State and all social accounts item by item.

By delving into these dry tables, we learn that Health Insurance expenditure, which includes city care, but also expenditure by public and private hospitals, will reach nearly 278 billion euros in 2027. A figure to compare with the approximately 247 billion displayed in 2023… A difference of around thirty billion. In detail, these projections count on 9.4 billion more for city care between 2024 and 2027, or even 8.8 billion for hospitals.

However, much more will be needed, in substance and form, to save the French system. How can we ensure that Social Security finances extremely expensive innovative medicines tomorrow? So that the positions already open at the hospital find motivated candidates? Questions that deserve more than budgetary sleight of hand.
