Three female students Gülşade Rabia Çakmak, Birnur Sinem Karaoğlan and Şevval Nil Esirgün, who achieved degrees in the Higher Education Institutions Examination held in Turkey in 2018, won the ‘Amgen Scholars’ scholarship and had the opportunity to conduct research at universities that are among the best in the world. Çakmak, Karaoğlan and Esirgün, who studied at Istanbul Medipol University International Faculty of Medicine, became the pride of Turkey. Students started their research at universities abroad with the ‘Amgen Scholars’ scholarship. At the end of the program, students will present their research at a symposium at Cambridge University, one of the most prestigious universities in the world.
‘I REPRESENT MY COUNTRY SUCCESSFULLY’
Gülşade Rabia Çakmak, a 4th year medical student who ranked 49th in Turkey in 2018 YKS numerical field, is also doing a double major in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Çakmak stated that he started his internship in the Health Technology Department of the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, which is in the 8th place in the QS World Universities ranking, and said, “I came here after a tough qualifying process, leaving behind hundreds of candidates. Here, I do research in the field of bone biomechanics, working on image processing, micro finite element analysis and 3D modeling. I will successfully represent Turkey here, return to my country with the experience I have gained, and continue my education and research,” he said.
ACCEPTED BY PASSING ALL CANDIDATES AROUND EUROPE
Şevval Nil Esirgün, who ranked 57th in Turkey in 2018 YKS, is a 4th year medical school student. Esirgün, who also did a double major in psychology, worked on many projects before. Esirgün, who has been involved in various TUBITAK projects on stem cells and heart diseases in the research center SABITA within Medipol University, is currently doing her internship at the Department of Biosystems Engineering at the University of Zurich. She became one of 17 people who were accepted to the internship program organized by Harvard University, among nearly 800 applications across Europe. Esirgün, who will present her projects at the symposium to be held at Cambridge University, conducts research on biotechnology and microfluidics-based technologies. Esirgün said, “My goal is to find solutions to the problems I see around me with the equipment I will acquire, and to improve the things that are already going well.”
BRONZE MEDAL STUDENT IN MUNICH
Sinem Karaoğlan, a fourth-year medical student, who ranked 75th in Turkey with the TÜBİTAK supplementary score in 2018 YKS numerical field, and won the bronze medal in the International Biology Olympics in high school, went to Munich Ludwig Maximilians University, one of the best universities in the world. Karaoğlan, who also did a double major in psychology, said that he was working on the molecular basis of metastasis in head and neck cancers and in three-dimensional cancer models.
