The Green Mile in the stream: A saint on death row
Georgia, in the 1930s: The inmates in Block-E know that the electric chair is waiting for them. Despite the horrific crimes they have committed, the guards under Head Warden Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) treat the convicts with respect and try to make their remaining days as pleasant as possible.
Paul especially shows a lot of compassion for the tall John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), who is over supernatural abilities seems to have it and whose guilt he begins to doubt.
Mystery thriller The Green Mile impresses with tension and heart
The Green Mile is one of the best film adaptations by horror genius Stephen King, of whom the the next adaptation is in the starting blocks. Director Darabont, who also wrote the screenplay, adopted many details from the six-part sequel novel in his three-hour version. The everyday life of guards and inmates on death row is reported with a lot of feeling and psychological depth, with the line between good and evil becoming blurred.
The Green Mile is consistently well cast, from literally the smallest supporting role (in this case the mouse Mr. Jingles) to the two main actors. With a rating of 8 out of 10 points, the justice drama comes in second place among the best films with Tom Hanks.
Without appearing striking, it manages to look critically at the issues of racism and the death penalty, especially the cruel method of execution of the electric chair. The Green Mile is a film that succeeds (at least briefly) in Light and humanity in a completely cruel place and ultimately brings you to tears.
